Give Up these Unhealthy Habits

Motivational sign about breaking bad habits.

Being successful in a medical weight loss program requires more than abiding by the rules of a diet and exercise program. A medical weight loss program introduces you to healthy habits that have to become part of your life. Making a total lifestyle change to embrace a healthier lifestyle is the only way to be truly successful and to achieve long-term weight loss.

But as you embrace these healthy habits and focus on being healthier, you have to do more than simply add a few things to your to-do list. Chances are that there are a few unhealthy or even toxic habits that may have contributed to your previously unhealthy lifestyle, and to truly become healthy you need to give those habits up, not just add new healthy habits on.

Some of these unhealthy habits are easy to spot. Snacking late into the night before going to bed hours after you should have can be easily changed into a healthy behavior by eating a healthy dinner and then going to bed early. Drinking too much soda, as we discussed in a different article, can easily be swapped out by increasing your water consumption. However, there are some habits that aren’t so easily swappable, but that you really need to let go of when you are ready to improve your health.

You may not realize that you have these unhealthy habits. The start of your medical weight loss program is a great time to analyze your thinking patterns and behaviors, and to let go of what isn’t working in your favor.

Here are a few toxic habits that you need to let go of if you want to improve your health:

  • You can want the best, but you can’t expect perfection every time. The problem with perfectionism is that it becomes easy to dismiss trying at all if there is doubt that you may not do it perfectly on your first try.
  • This isn’t just bad for your back, it is bad for your confidence level. People slouch to make themselves smaller. When you are trying to take up less space or blend into the background, then you aren’t giving yourself the space and confidence that you deserve. Stand up tall and be proud in what you do.
  • You are you, and you are the only you that there is. Stop comparing yourself to other people at every turn. Embrace who you are and spend more time developing an identity you are proud of. You can do this by focusing more on presenting yourself how you want to look, and by not dwelling on failures.

These negative thought patterns may not seem like they are related to weight loss, but self-improvement concerns the whole body and mind. The more comfortable you are with yourself, the more likely you are to be successful with your weight loss goals.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr Robert Ziltzer! He helped me reach my ideal weight and more importantly maintain it for over 2 years. He has also helped me keep my blood pressure exactly where my internist wanted it. Dr Ziltzer is not only exceptional in weight management but also a truly gifted internet’s. His knowledge, kindness, and dedication are remarkable. I am deeply grateful for his care and recommend him whole heartedly!

I really felt comfortable with Kristen at my initial appointment. Everyone at the center was caring and friendly, from Bianca, at the front desk, to Lily, who is the MA. Kristen listened to my frustrations and prior disappointments about what has not worked, and is confident that she can help me achieve my goals of weight loss. I am looking forward and excited to see the success I will attain.

I'd lost 20 pounds on my own and struggled to keep it off. I decided GLP-1 meds were the next step in losing more and keeping it off. I wanted a medical doctor supervised program and chose SWLC. I am so very glad I did! The team in Glendale is so supportive and kind; and when I feel discouraged, they pick me up with positive energy and input. They really do a great job with encouragement all the time. 6 weeks in I've lost 17 pounds, and am approaching weight loss with a very new perspective. Also knowing that when I reach my target goal, they'll be there through maintenance and beyond is encouraging as well. Good to not feel alone on this journey.
