For the Hottest Workouts, Be Prepared

In Scottsdale, it doesn’t matter what time of the year it is: Arizona is hot. While the Spring and Summer months are the most unbearable in many ways, just about any day of the year holds the potential for incredibly high temperatures.

But as part of your medical weight loss program, you need to figure out ways that you can stay active—and that usually means getting outside for a quick workout once a day. This means that you are going to have to face the heat, and when you do so, it is best that you are prepared.

Staying Cool for Weight Loss

The best thing that you can do when you are going outside to work out in the heat is to stay hydrated. During your weight loss program you are already encouraged to drink a lot of water, especially instead of sugary drinks like sodas and juices.

You can help yourself stay hydrated by following these basic tips:

  • Drink a full serving (at least 8 ounces) of water an hour before working out
  • Drink another serving of water (another 8 ounces) for every hour that you are outside
  • Add another serving of water if the temperature is above 90 degrees

Of course, these are just basic guidelines. If you are feeling thirsty during a workout, then you need to stop and have a drink. Dehydration doesn’t happen instantly, but that doesn’t mean it won’t sneak up on you. If you aren’t drinking enough water regularly, then there is a chance that you could start to experience symptoms of dehydration rather quickly after heading out in the sun. What’s worse, many people don’t realize that what they are experiencing is dehydration, which can lead to serious trouble.

Symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Dry skin
  • Headache

If you are experiencing symptoms of dehydration, then you need to focus on hydrating before you exert any more fluids by sweating. To ensure that you are able to stay healthy through your workout, make a point to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

In addition to hydration issues, the next biggest concern that too many people face as they begin including outdoor exercise into their daily lifestyle is sunburn. You can prevent sunburn by wearing SPF every day, and by using protective clothing including hats and long-sleeved moisture-wicking shirts that are designed to keep you cool as you sweat.

Preparing your body beforehand by staying hydrated and wearing the right clothing as you head outside can help you maximize your energy and workout potential as you head outside, and this can help you achieve the greatest weight loss results.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr Robert Ziltzer! He helped me reach my ideal weight and more importantly maintain it for over 2 years. He has also helped me keep my blood pressure exactly where my internist wanted it. Dr Ziltzer is not only exceptional in weight management but also a truly gifted internet’s. His knowledge, kindness, and dedication are remarkable. I am deeply grateful for his care and recommend him whole heartedly!

I really felt comfortable with Kristen at my initial appointment. Everyone at the center was caring and friendly, from Bianca, at the front desk, to Lily, who is the MA. Kristen listened to my frustrations and prior disappointments about what has not worked, and is confident that she can help me achieve my goals of weight loss. I am looking forward and excited to see the success I will attain.

I'd lost 20 pounds on my own and struggled to keep it off. I decided GLP-1 meds were the next step in losing more and keeping it off. I wanted a medical doctor supervised program and chose SWLC. I am so very glad I did! The team in Glendale is so supportive and kind; and when I feel discouraged, they pick me up with positive energy and input. They really do a great job with encouragement all the time. 6 weeks in I've lost 17 pounds, and am approaching weight loss with a very new perspective. Also knowing that when I reach my target goal, they'll be there through maintenance and beyond is encouraging as well. Good to not feel alone on this journey.
