Almost everyone has tried to lose weight and failed. Many of us have tried at least 7 times. Our average patient has tried 8-12 times. We try the latest fad diet or new supplement, each of them promising to be the next quick diet fix or weight loss miracle. Overweight and obesity ARE medical conditions and if not treated may lead to or have already caused serious problems.
What is Medical Weight Loss?
Medical weight loss is provided by an obesity medicine specialist–a physician or nurse practitioner who specializes in weight loss. Some receive special advanced training and become certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
How Does Medical Weight Loss Work?
The benefit to evaluation and treatment by medical obesity specialists is the many tools at their disposal. A medical weight loss program includes:
- Medically monitored reduced-calorie diets (often with meal replacements)
- Prescription appetite suppressant medications
- A comfortable and warm office with specialized staff
- Accountability and group classes taught by psychologists, dietitians, exercise physiologists, and physicians
All of these techniques are designed to help you lose weight as fast and successfully as possible. The other benefit is a focus on keeping off the lost weight.
The most important part about using a specialized medical professional for weight loss is that the methods are proven, safe, and effective. Your doctor will work with you to discover your reasons for being overweight and then work with you to find ways to lose that weight. He or she can take into account the effect of medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure as you lose weight.
