The Federal Government has recently introduced a new food icon, MyPlate, which will replace the previous food icon, MyPyramid. The icon was designed to help consumers in building a healthier plate at meals by illustrating how to make the best food choices for a balanced diet. The plate emphasizes portion recommendations for fruits, grains, vegetables, protein and dairy food groups.
Along with the new icon, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans outline the basic principles for establishing a healthier life. These guidelines are used in national nutrition education programs, federal nutrition assistance programs, and dietary advice provided by health and nutrition professionals.
The Guidelines include:
Balance Calories
- Enjoy your food, but eat less.
- Avoid oversized portions.
Foods to Increase
- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.
Foods to Reduce
- Compare sodium (salt) in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals, and choose foods with lower numbers.
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
