Testing your Nutritional Knowledge

Red apple on stack of books.

The greatest benefit of working with a medical weight loss program is that you have access to nutritional and weight loss experts day after day. This means that you can benefit from following a healthier diet, improve your personal fitness level and even achieve your weight loss goal without having to invest the mental energy of becoming a health expert yourself.

Following the instructions given to you at your medical weight loss office can help you make huge strides in improving your health, but the reality is that there will come a day when you are confronted with a question regarding your meal options and you’ll have to make the choice on your own. You don’t need to become a health expert to know how to be a healthier individual. Taking a bit of time to learn a few basics about nutrition can take you as far as you need to go.

What’s Worth Knowing?

Is it better to eat vegetables fresh, or are frozen vegetables fine? Is sugar really the highly-addicting nutritional villain it has been made out to be in recent years? What about red meat? What about carbs? What is a newbie to do with all of the contradicting information floating around the internet regarding nutrition and weight loss?

When you sign up for a medical weight loss program you’ll be given a nutritional plan. This means that you always have the information and resources shared by your nutritionist or weight loss doctor. You cannot go wrong if you follow their advice.

Here are a few pieces of information that are definitely worth knowing:

  • Just because something says “sugar free,” that does not mean it is healthy. Corn syrup is a great example of how something without table sugar can still be overly sweetened and calorie heavy. Also, swapping out sugar for fat isn’t a smart idea either.
  • It is true that there are healthy foods and not-so-healthy foods, but the reality is that all foods have calories and all calories count, so it doesn’t matter what you are snacking on. If you aren’t hungry, those calories can hurt your weight loss goals.
  • Elimination diets and specialized eating plans can help you lose weight, but not all are equal. There are some people who benefit from eating Paleo or going vegan, but not everyone reacts to those diets easily. You are better off working with your medical weight loss doctor to develop a dietary plan that takes in all sorts of different foods in moderation.

Between finding the time to actually prepare healthy meals and fit in regular workouts, few people have time to actually invest in learning about health and nutrition—not to the point where you may feel like an expert who can make judgement calls on your own. Put your time and energy into focusing on the tasks set for you by your weight loss doctor. Just learning a few basics about health and nutrition can take you as far as you need to go. And when you have a larger question about health, weight loss or nutrition, reach out to your medical weight loss center.

I landed at Scottsdale Weight Loss 13 years ago and lost 50 pounds….regained 10 and then lost them again, plus another 20. It is a great program, and all the professionals are amazing and caring.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr Robert Ziltzer! He helped me reach my ideal weight and more importantly maintain it for over 2 years. He has also helped me keep my blood pressure exactly where my internist wanted it. Dr Ziltzer is not only exceptional in weight management but also a truly gifted internet’s. His knowledge, kindness, and dedication are remarkable. I am deeply grateful for his care and recommend him whole heartedly!

I really felt comfortable with Kristen at my initial appointment. Everyone at the center was caring and friendly, from Bianca, at the front desk, to Lily, who is the MA. Kristen listened to my frustrations and prior disappointments about what has not worked, and is confident that she can help me achieve my goals of weight loss. I am looking forward and excited to see the success I will attain.

I'd lost 20 pounds on my own and struggled to keep it off. I decided GLP-1 meds were the next step in losing more and keeping it off. I wanted a medical doctor supervised program and chose SWLC. I am so very glad I did! The team in Glendale is so supportive and kind; and when I feel discouraged, they pick me up with positive energy and input. They really do a great job with encouragement all the time. 6 weeks in I've lost 17 pounds, and am approaching weight loss with a very new perspective. Also knowing that when I reach my target goal, they'll be there through maintenance and beyond is encouraging as well. Good to not feel alone on this journey.
