Link Between Working Parents and Childhood Obesity?

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University College London links changes in the prevalence of working mothers to an increase in obesity rates in children and adolescents. The study analyzed data from over 8,500 adults in Britain who were born in 1958. It compared obesity rates and working parent data to the same factors in the children born of these adults.

A large study in England found children with low self-esteem and anxiety had a greater risk of obesity as adults. The study published in BMC Medicine this week studied 6500 children born in 1970, and studied them 30 years later.

A new study that hit the newspapers today shows that among 4 year olds: nearly “13 percent of Asian children were obese, along with 16 percent of whites, almost 21 percent of blacks, 22 percent of Hispanics, and 31 percent of American Indians.

Hunger-Free Kids Act is unveiled

On March 17, the Hunger-Free Kids Act was released, with the plan to provide $3.2 billion towards “Promoting health and reducing childhood obesity.” This would be administered through the Department of Agriculture. The Program aims to overhaul school lunches, and develop national standards for revenue generating foods such as vending machines. Since childhood obesity is at crisis levels, and since most children with obesity become adults with obesity, I feel this is a good place to start.
