What is it that makes a bad day actually bad? Sometimes it is getting bad news, or any series of unfortunate events that cause stress and unhappiness, but more often than that it is actually pretty small occurrences that we allow to define our day for us. Spilled coffee, traffic in the morning, a stain on your shirt—it is these kind of experiences that leads someone to say “it is going to be one of those days.”
The thing is, just as these small happenings in our day to day life can shift your day to feeling bad, little actions can do just as much to make your day feel good. It doesn’t take great news to make a good day feel good. Sometimes it is just a series of little things, hitched together with a positive attitude and a happy disposition that can turn an average day into something a lot more special.
When you are trying to lose weight, it can seem like there is a lot going against you. Letting those little things pile up can make every day feel long and arduous, but finding ways to bring little bits of sunshine into your daily routine can make a big difference in your energy level and overall attitude towards your weight loss success.
Here are a few simple ways that you can make a big improvement in your average day:
- Find a few minutes to step away from the hustle and bustle and listen to a few good songs. Have a playlist set on your phone to make it easy to find the perfect song for any moment.
- Take the time to plate your food on your favorite dishes or to pour yourself a glass of ice-water in a nice glass.
- Call an old friend or family member just to say hi. Don’t call to talk about your problems, but instead call and listen and hear how they are doing. This is a great way to spend a few minutes and is sure to put a smile on your face.
- Schedule a trip to do some window shopping. Whether you prefer the mall, the car lot, or the bookstore, deciding on a time in the next week that you can go ahead and take a few for yourself can really help shift your mood by giving you something simple to look forward to.
Other simple strategies you can use include getting outside to go for a walk, or switching up your exercise routine in some way to give yourself something new and exciting to do. When little things aren’t going your way, don’t beat yourself up, just find ways to bring positive moments into your day. Focusing on the little things that make you happy can have a huge impact on your overall level of satisfaction and happiness as you focus on losing weight.
